Research Scientist – Protein Engineering and Conjugation

Salary: £30,000 – £40,000, 30 days holidays and matching pension to 10% plus a wide range of benefits.

 

The Opportunity

As a senior scientist in protein engineering, you are expected to provide technical leadership in the generation of new approaches to engineer SpyTag/SpyCatcher-like technology for conjugation of diverse biomolecules (which may include peptides, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, small molecules or nucleic acids). You will implement these new tools for tailored assembly to recruit various arms of the immune response, to extend the range of diseases where the vaccine platforms protect. You will be required to drive the upstream development for promising candidates, before they go into immunization testing.

You will be highly organised, motivated, and with proven experience in working with various protein systems. You will have good interpersonal skills and be able to interact productively and accurately with other team members. Previous laboratory experience, good teamwork and the ability to innovate are essential.

Key responsibilities

  • Plan, design and execute the construction of protein/peptide partners for enhanced conjugation.
  • Establish efficient cloning, expression and purification of relevant proteins in coli and/or eukaryotic cell systems.
  • Validate conjugation and assembly with appropriate methods, which may include MS, chromatography, electrophoresis and EM.
  • Engage actively with the downstream team towards testing of novel conjugations for immunization.
  • Investigate, develop and establish new technology to improve efficiency and generality of the engineered pairs and conjugation routes, both for isolated proteins and nanoparticles.
  • Establish structure-based and library-based approaches to enhance molecular assemblies for optimal induction of immune responses.
  • Produce well written, compliant & traceable laboratory notebooks & raw data files
  • Write and review SOPs
  • Contribute cell line expertise, as requested, to other member of staff and collaborators.
  • Provide education and training to other staffs as necessary and appropriate.
  • Contribute to the efficient running, cleanliness and tidiness of the laboratory.

 

Selection criteria

Essential

  • A PhD in a relevant biochemistry or chemical biology subject.
  • Self-motivated, technically competent and capable of working independently in a laboratory.
  • Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing demands whilst operating under pressure to deadlines.
  • Good documentation and computer proficiency (Excel, PowerPoint and Word).
  • High-level of attention to detail.
  • Ability to analyse and research complex issues and write factual reports.
  • Experience in planning multiple projects.
  • Good understanding of protein structure and reactivity.
  • Experience in efficiently cloning, expressing and purifying a range of different proteins.

Senior Scientist – Virology

As a senior scientist in virology, you are expected to develop, establish and engineer new recombinant viral-vectors as well as oncolytic viruses, including adenovirus, for different indications.

Key responsibilities

  • Plan, design and execute the construction of viral vectors, including oncolytic adenoviruses.
  • Responsible for the day-to-day production of all viral vectors.
  • Development of virus production and purification methods to improve production efficiency.

  • Produce well written, good laboratory practice compliant & traceable laboratory notebooks & raw data files.
  • Write and review protocols and SOPs when required.
  • Maintenance of production and stock databases.
  • Oversee and work closely with external subcontractors when required.
  • To maintain confidentiality regarding data when interacting with non-collaborating researchers.
  • Engage actively with the process development of vaccine candidates for cGMP manufacture.
  • Liaise with cGMP facilities during technology transfer.

  • A PhD in a relevant biological subject.
  • To have an in-depth knowledge of the processes and experience in generating viral vectors and/or oncolytic adenoviruses.
  • Good sterile technique and experience in routine maintenance of production cell lines.
  • Self-motivated, technically competent and capable of working independently in a laboratory.
  • Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing demands whilst operating under pressure to deadlines.
  • Good documentation and computer proficiency (Excel, PowerPoint and Word).

Senior Scientist – Purification Process Development

Salary: £30,000 – £45,000, 30 days holidays and matching pension to 10% plus a wide range of benefits.

As a senior member of the team, you are expected to provide technical leadership from bench in downstream purification of recombinant protein and virus-like-particles (VLP) vaccine candidates. A key focus will be to progress the selected candidate towards cGMP manufacture and you will be required to drive the process development activities, as well as liaising with cGMP facilities as projects move towards technology transfer.
You will be highly organised, motivated, and with proven experience in protein and/or VLP purification and analysis. You will have good interpersonal skills and be able to interact productively and accurately with other team members. A key focus will be to implement the latest automated platforms, such as ClonePix and FACS, to increase research through-put. You will be required to drive the upstream development activities for promising candidates towards cGMP manufacture.

You will be highly organised, motivated, and with proven experience in working with various expression systems. You will have good interpersonal skills and be able to interact productively and accurately with other team members.
